I have an established fig tree which I planted in ignorance of the suggested restricting of the root when planting. As a consequence the tree is leggy but does bear fruit, albeit in limited quantity. Is it possible to dig around the existing root effectively root pruning it and subsequently restricting further growth of the roots by sinking paving slabs or the like around it?

this is what my uncle did about 30 yrs ago. the fig respond beautifully. it is still doing well though the garden belongs to some one else now.

Yes to what you have said though I would use bricks to constrain the roots to ease drainage - am thinking slabs might be too large and cause water to accumulate which Figs do not like.
