I havre a picket fence at the front of my house and want to grow a hedge behind it that will come through the gaps and provide a contrast with the wod of the fence. I'd like something a bit irregular and arching (so no privet) and preferably with flowers and/or some colour. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

As Buzzbuz says, Escallonia is a good idea, Apple blossom is one of the best. Cotoneaster Horizontalis could also prove a good choice. Pamg's Hardy Fuschia would be fine.

Sorry - I should have said - I want a hedge about 6 foot high. I'm in London - the soil is clay and the site is more or less west facing. it gets sun from midday- 5pm in the summer. Thanks.

You could try escallonia which has an arching habit, and pretty (small) pink flowers in summer. I eventually gets to 6 foot but can be trimmed back.
