Also is it possible to get rid of an old creeper on the side of the house. Its roots must be well under the house. My ideal would be to plant a wisteria there instead. Of course it might be too difficult.

Any chance you can show a photo of it. The best way to get rid of unwanted climbers on walls is to chop the plant off at the place where the root rises above ground. You may need to use a root killer to get rid of the root if it is too big to dig out. Depending on what it is there could be damage to the pointing on your wall. You will need to ensure it is in good condition before growing anything else against it. The new wisteria will need to be supported by tying in to wires strung across the face of the wall.
