Can anyone tell me how to get rid of bamboo growing through from a neighbours garden. The new shoots are really sharp and dangerous with young (barefoot) children

Bamboo generates questions in similar vein so often. Very difficult to deal with because if you kill (poison) the shoots, the possibility is that it'll cause die-back next door (although probably not much!). All you can do is cut off, as low underground as you can, the offending shoots, and somehow dig in a protective shield to prevent further encroachment. Something like a sheet of plastic material. I've used the side of a very large tree pot in the past, cut it down and folded it out flat, then buried it to contain the emerging shoots. An alternative is to ask the neighbour to do the same his side, so the shoots don't approach your ground. Becoming worse than the leylandii problem, this one.

Thanks for reply. Yes it's a nightmare! I would need to dig such a big part of garden up. They run at least 40' along my fence and grow out at least 10' into the lawn

I have to mow the lawn when the girls and friends want to run around the garden. Such a shame.?

Oh dear. In which case, I suspect a man skilled in the use of a small digger might be the only course of action open to you. Should be about £200 - £250, plus the disposal of any stuff removed. Even the clump forming bamboos (phyllostachys and fargesia) will spread if conditions aren't to their liking where they are. The worst type is one called pseudosasa japonica, widely planted in the 70s and 80s because of the tropical feel it gave to a garden, and widely fought ever since!

I would advise you to cut and apply something to the actual shoot that is poking through to yours.

There is that angle, true! As I said, I bet it wouldn't have much of an effect anyway, I was just erring on the side of caution.

Brilliant, you lot have just given me the green light to go on a killing rampage!!! (Of the bamboo type!) I'm not forking out ---excuse the pun---- £250 to dig up someone else's weeds!!! Yes I'll find something to treat my side. Thank you all again?

You could explain the problem to your neighbour over a cup of coffee in your garden and he/she could see for himself how his bamboo is ruining your enjoyment and how your youngsters can hurt their feet. Hopefully he will have a conscience and deal with it himself by getting rid of it on his side and coming round regularly to deal with yours! Maybe he'll even hire the digger!!

To be fair to the neighbour, the bamboo has already pushed the fence down, which he replaced. I thought he would have kept the bamboo in check as the bamboo is going to push the fence down again. So feel really mean having another moan. And I hardly ever see them as they back onto us from another road. Thank you all for your replies and input. I'm going to treat it my side first. I'll keep you all posted
