does nandina domestica grow in a pot?

I tried mine in a pot because I wanted it by a door (where there was no soil). It wasn't at all happy -over several years. Last year I planted it in the ground, under a large acer, near my summerhouse door. It's flourishing! It's quite shaded but it's grown in all directions and keeps flowering.
