I have a lot of eating apples on my tree again this year. What is the best way to store them ? Monty Don tells me to space them apart on a slatted shelf, somewhere dark and that they'll last for months. But I was told I should wrap them all separately in newspaper and store in a shed or garage for best results.
Are both of them wrong and is there perhaps a better way to store over several months ?

Slatted shelf, somewhere darkish and cool. Old kitchens used to have slatted shelves, beneath work surfaces where you could store apples (my mother in law had one in what she called her 'outer' kitchen which came with the house, the storage shelves I mean, held an awful lot of apples). I guess these days, most of us don't have kitchens cool enough nor big enough for such a bit of kit, so maybe the newspaper in the shed suggestion is because of that.

Or how about the loft? People in country areas sometimes had an "apple attic". But unless you are sure they are good keepers do keep your eye on them. Regular inspections and turf out any that are going off.

Get some apple boxes from a supermarket with the inserts which they use to keep the apples separate in transit. Store the fruit in these in a cool dark place. (The Travelling Wilbury's song comes to mind)
Nice to have slatted shelves, but who has? Wrapping the fruit sounds great, but then you have to unwrap them to check condition.
We store a couple of hundred pounds of apples like this every year.

Gosh Owdboggy, do you eat them all? If an apple a day keeps the doctor away they must all have left town by now...

Thanks guys, for your suggestions, I have a room I built up in the roof many years ago that I never thought of, that we now just use for storage. Sounds ideal as my garage is bulging at the seems. And I already have 2 large slatted shelves I can use.
And I shan't be bothering with wrapping th apples in newspaper.

Steragram. Yes, eventually, as Apple juice as well. And of course the Field fares and blackbirds get their share.
