can I grow jasmine officinale in a large tub or do roots prefer to spread?

It won't do well in a tub at all. As this climber gets 30 feet in a fairly short space of time, and spreads sideways through the soil at the roots, make sure, if you plant it in the garden, that you have plenty of space for it.
