The H3 Fuchsias stand the winters here, not trouble, but they do have to be pruned to the ground in early Spring as all the top growth dies. But so far in 18 years they have all come back and we are in an extremely cold part of the West Midlands.

I mulch mine about 2/3 inches in depth with bark October / November AROUND THE BASE OF THE PLANT so you still have time, the top growth may die with the winter but it should re-sprout in the spring

That's what I do too - the idea is to protect the crown from getting frozen. Leave the top growth on until new growth starts next year as additional protection. Planting deep in the first place as Poppylinda says is an additional safeguard.

I had some "expert" advice at Wisley when buying a new hardy fuchsia......plant deeper than soil level by 2" then backfill in spring, I expect to protect the young one from frost.I havn't had any problem with the two I didn't though even in the 2009-10 winter of minus 10!!!
