early spring and as a general rule of thumb thats the best time to move or cut most plants,shrubs,trees as theres know more frost and the growing seasen will cover up any cuts and damage the best.

Now, Speedy. It's recommended that you cut a third of the shoots back quite hard each year, back to the graft point. By doing it this way you can maintain a pretty shape.
