I live 4 miles from the coast and conditions can be windy. Would laurel be ok for a hedge under these conditions?

I would go with Griselinia, we're a mile away from the sea, copes really well.

As long as Sophie isn't in a very cold area! Griselinia is not reliably hardy in areas. where the temps. go minus for too long.

If you mean Prunus laurocerasus, it'll be fine - if you mean Aucuba (spotted laurel), I'd be inclined to use Elaeagnus for hedging instead, or Griselinia
