I am being a bit thick?

East Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Am I being a bit thick?
Or should that be very thick :o)

how does the question having a number help identify previous ones. surely it takes ages to trawl the questions to find a match. is there an easy way that I havent stumbled on?

It is no help at all so far as I can see

I can't see the benefit either, to be honest!

Interested to see if we receive guidance on this...

I guess if you're clever enough to note down somewhere the number of a question with answers of interest, then you could easily find it again later by typing in the number into the search box? Dunno if that works though, never tried it, lol

Search box for Question numbers isn't working too well yet...
I'm hoping Peter or Ajay will add input to this thread soon ....
There is a way to find a specific question number...
.. but I'll leave them to explain it... :o)

Hi Folks,

We tried this as we thought it would help in the situation where someone has asked a question but a similar question has been answered previously.

If you know the number of the previous question, enter it into the box and we'll add a comment with a link to it. I've done it below linking to the very first question on GoY. You can also add links to a question by adding q:xxx in your comment where xxx is the question number.

It hasn't really been used and we were thinking of removing it if it's not useful.

Hi, I think this was answered on question 1

Peter, can we link on a comment to a GoYpedia topic. ?
That would be very useful...

e.g.
Hi, I think you can find answers on GoYpedia Gnomes...

I find on questions I often write out a long explanation of getting help from GoYpedia, by explaining how to scroll down to click on G for Gnomes or whichever...

A shorter way of doing this would be helpful, and the GoYpedia topic will often contain related questions as well...

I don't think any of us remember the numbers Peter... I'm not efficient enough to make a note at the time.

11 Mar, 2010

I jot down a question number without any words next to it, and then wonder later what it means...
... such as.....is it a phone number ? Lol.

11 Mar, 2010

Hi again,

Sorry, we don't expect anyone to remember question numbers :o)

We sometimes see people explaining that they have answered a question before, or how to use the search box to find previous answers. Rather than write the explanation we thought if a question rings a bell that finding the original & noting it's number might be easier. Maybe it just adds unnecessary complication.

TT - no linking to the GoYpedia at the moment. Might see how this one goes first :o)

I know that one - I call it "old envelope syndrome" (having a tendency to scribble things on them and then recycle regardless)

11 Mar, 2010

Seagirl....
the answer to your question is no, you are not being thick at all. !
Not a bit thick, not very thick ...
This numbering of questions does indeed seem rather complicated...Lol... :o)

PS. Bamboo. "old envelope syndrome"... I like that. LOL.

Well i am releived as i thought I was having middleaged moments. not quite a senior yet.

Thanks for all the answers. will any one rememeber my question number? I dont think I will either. :o)

Thanks for trying it out though.

11 Mar, 2010

Well SBG, your question has given me a little giggle if nothing else so it was useful. Lol

11 Mar, 2010

are you down in the dumps Ian? hope not. that hundred weight of spuds on the windowsill will be fine..... dont fret :o)
Glad I can raise a smile :o)

11 Mar, 2010

Hi Peter I honestly don't think it is working... I would still love to see us not have 'Guest' questions... and I recognise it is your and Ajay's decision but there are so many that are crap questions.

11 Mar, 2010

I'm not down in the dumps now SBG! Lol
I agree with you MG. I certainly don't like answering crossword or homework questions!

12 Mar, 2010

At least now it seems we know it's not useful.

MG, there is a little link that says 'hide guest questions' on the main questions page, just under the blue button. It's quite small though. If you click on that you will hide the, erm... rubbish?

12 Mar, 2010

I have noticed, though, that lots of Guests then go on to join, Moongrower.

12 Mar, 2010

Ah spotted Peter - never noticed before... will now have to have a think. Yes some Guests do go on to become members but a lot just ask a daft question and disappear Bamboo.

12 Mar, 2010

I don't mind having a go at answering some 'guest' questions - but there really are some strange ones, aren't there. 'Daft' is a good word, Mg!

12 Mar, 2010

lol Spritz...

How do I say thanks?
