Most Clematis are hardy, though the evergreen ones are less so. Evisons have produced a whole ruck of new smaller growing Cllematis for pots recently. Most decent Garden Centres and Clematis specialists sell them now.

I've got two 3 in pots on a balcony - its a bit of a bore when its windy and they're in flower, they can get a bit battered, but more important is the size of the pots - mine are Niobe, jackmanni (mistake that one, gets too big, bought as something else mislabelled), and I can't for the life of me remember the other one's name, but they get to between 8 and 10 feet in the ground (so not 15foot varieties) and in the pots, they get about 4/5 feet, up clematis netting - the pots are 2 feet deep and 12 inches wide and I have only one in each.

Hi Many thanks to you both, i will have a look in the garden centers today. Also, I dont know if either of you can help, but i have a large balcony which does get alot of sun, but it can also get very windy because I live very close to the sea. Do you know of anything else i can grow in pots, which has some fragrence and not to big. I do have 2 Ayramilas, but I do not know if i can put them outside, also a gardinia which i have neurtured from a cutting and is only about 4 months old, but has already started to flower. Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks again Jacquie

Unless your gardenia is 'Kleims Hardy', and it doesn't sound like it is, you can't put that outside, although you can stand it out during the warmest part of the summer. Armaryllis are technically indoor plants, particularly at this time of year, but there is a member of this site who grows them outside - not sure how they've managed to get them to flower in the summer though, but it is something that could be outside but only in the summer. You could have Lilies in pots - they're not all fragrant though, so be careful what you choose - Lilium regale is an obvious one with a very strong fragrance, and can stay outside in pots all year, but you will have to be vigilant for lily beetle.

Thank you so much for your reply, I will definately keep them in doors, and have a look at the lilies. I have bought a Clematus and a Standard rose tree today, Having lots of fun trying to design the layout of the balcony which is very big, because I am in a wheelchair, so I also need plants which do not need to much looking after,If you get any more ideas please let me know.

Oh lovely, a large balcony - I have a balcony, but its small so I can't get too much on it if I want to be out there as well. Be good to know which way it faces though - does it get much sun?
