How do I stop my seed potatoes from going soft while I waiting for them to chit? They are in a cool, light area in egg boxes.

I mean soft - flacid. I read in a gardening book that I shouldn't plant soft potatoes.

If they are simply flacid they will be fine. If you think about it sitting around for a few months they are almost bound to be soft.

Potatoes are basically food for the new growing plant and that food will diminish slightly during the chitting phase. It IS perfectly normal and not a problem otherwise I have about five kilos of rubbish on my bedroom windowsill!

Do you mean soft..rotten, or soft...flacid? The tuber will shrivel a little before you plant it but not too much. Don't be tempted to water them.
