I have been given a sack of wood ash which contains approximately 10% coal ash. Is it safe to use on my allotment for growing my potatoes??

Definitely NOT! ! ! Coal ash contains toxins that can harm you. I'm sure other members can give you a breakdown but I would advise against using it!
