Hello everyone, and thank you all. It is in fact a very little corner that I want to fill, and the shade is VERY DEEP. I wonder what you all do with such a challenging spot? It is under a rose, not so close to it that nothing should be planted because of the roses roots, but in really FULL shade from it. Would the plants you have suggested still survive in it? By the way, it is heavy clay.

I have a garden on my list with very heavy clay soil under a plum tree in pretty much deep shade, and I have planted the Lamium I mention there - it does very well. I wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise, Jonathan, you already said deep shade.

That's good because I have some Lamium Maculatum growing in a pot. If I try to split a bit off, I hope a new plant will it take from that to save me money. It did get a bit slug nibbled last year.

Bet yours isn't 'White Nancy'! Pretty cheap to buy this time of year - they sometimes sell it for people to use in hanging baskets. This cultivar is quite striking in shade

Mine is 'Silver Beacon'. Will it be as good?

Jonathan don't for god's sake put Mec. cambrica anywhere near your garden. Given that nearly everything is container grown you will have a high old time removing the seedlings from your pots and you will NEVER be free of it. It is a pretty 'weed' in our garden and we try to remember to deadhead prior to seeding - we never catch them all though!

try mitella. i have it under the beech tree and it is a small leaf plant and it creeps steadily too. It is in my plant profile too.

'Silver Beacon' is okay - but I still prefer White Nancy.

I would avoid euphorbia robbiae as well as it runs, even on clay. Blechnum spicant is a dwarf fern that will put up with any amount shade and dry spots too

I think I will go for the Lamium. I've just read somewhere that it can be divided, so I'll split a bit off and plant a bit of that there. Thank you so much everyone. Problem solved.
