Please could someone give me some advice about the needs of these lilies - how much shade will they take, if any, for example, and will they flower in their first year? Thanks.

On plant Lilium martagon

I have them to go in a semi shady spot in my borders. Mine leafed last year but no flowers:o( the bulbs were some what shrivelled when i got them. but they are plump and firm this spring. I expect them to flower this year. My rhs book said they tolerate quite deep shade. So fingers crossed.

I think they prefer light shade to dark shade - the best display of them I saw in a garden was in light woodland. They don't like being moved around and may take a year or two to settle in before flowering

they have them in the woods in Harlow Carr.

We have seen them growing in the Pyrenees in full sun and they were extremely happy. In our garden they are in part shade but that is only because there is very little full sun in the garden.

Thanks - from what you say, Sbg, you lifted yours for the winter - is that necessary? Andrew says they don't like being moved - so what's the answer to that? Lift - or leave in?

We don't lift ours unless they are getting overcrowded

Thanks, Mg. I think I'll plant a group facing east and another group facing west! How about that for hedging my bets? lol.
