I have an Acer in a large pot on the patio. Have noticed on the top of the compost are dozens of small..5 to 10 millimetres..greeny white balls. When I sqash them liquid comes out. Are they some sort of insect egg?

Sounds like snail eggs. Remove and destroy them unless yoy have a helpful robin around! However, some plant food in compost looks like little balls, but probably aren't squishy.
