my cordyline has grown too tall for me to manage. can it be cut down to a more manageable size. will it produce more leaves or will it remain a bare tree trunk?

It's a risk - but if its too large, its worth a try. Cut it down to where you want it - you might find it shoots from the base rather than the top of the stem though.
