my cordyline palm has gone brown and now the top drop off and the base is soft to touch like its rotten why this?

This last winter has killed many off though it's still worth waiting to see what happens over the next month or two. They often re shoot from the base though if yours is rotten at the base of the plant?

Leave it for now anyway.
