Not strictly a gardening question but I am getting so frustrated at forgetting to check the size of a photo in MB and getting to the end of the process only to be told it is too big. Everything entered is lost along with the photo. I understand that there needs to be a limit on size but my problem is how do I ensure when I am taking my pictures that I am within the limits.

Thank for the quick response Fractal. jpg is what I have or jpeg I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager to edit. I tried cutting them down but to no avail. I'm sure I'm missing the point. I went back in and tried resizing to see if it made any difference but it did not. The size does not seem to affect the MB's. It must be something to do with the content but what?

Out of interest, when you right click>properties on an image on your computer that you want to upload, what is the size of the file?

Try changing the format to bmp or even gif and see if that works.

Scotsgran are you making sure you save as a low res jpg? I wouldn't use gif or bmp for colour if you can avoid it

I always resize in Photoshop to 640 x 480 jpg and these are always accepted.

the site will take any pic under 5mb, i use jpeg and size of my pics vary from 200kbs to 5 mb, they get accepted no bother.

Thank you everybody. You are all being very kind and patient. The size is 5.94Mb so it is too big. What I am using is a Traveler DC X which is an aim and take basic camera. My husband was saying maybe it is 5.94Mb because of what the camera is seeing at that moment. I am going to go out and retake the picture and see if there is any difference. I am not blaming the site, the problem is my lack of understanding of how to avoid taking photos over 5mb. I would hate to take something really worth sharing, and not be able to, because I don't know what I'm doing. I haven't been able to find any way of saving in a different format to see if it makes any difference and there does not seem to be any facility for saving in a low res jpg either. Oh dear is it time to hit the education button and go on a digital photography course and then upgrade the camera equipment.

Assuming you are PC rather than Mac based you can buy Photoshop Elements for around £25 and it will do everything you need. It is what Mr MB (Bulbaholic) uses. I use either photoshop or Graphic Converter as I am Mac based.

I forgot to click submit again. Old age doesn't come on its own. Thank you MG I will get one of those Photoshop Elements packages ASAP. My birthday on first of May. I have managed to capture a shot at 4.40mb so I can get going again. I also got shots at well over 7mb.

I use photoshop elements too and it does all I need.

Thankyou Fractal. It is so nice to have an encyclopedia on hand like you all are.

You can reduce the File size of your pictures. This is not the same as reducing the Pixel width. This is dead easy in any of the Photoshop programs (I have PS 7) but I know it works in Elements too. When you have loaded up your photo and altered the width etc., then click on Save As. Give the picture a name. Click on Save. Up will come a Screen with JPEG Options. One of them is a File reduction choice from Small to Large. Choose which you want. The File size is shown at the bottom of the Chioce Wizard. If you are on Dialup like me then choose a Medium 5 setting which reduces a 450 by 338 pixels picture to a file size of around 55 kb. There sems to be no major loss of quality at that size. Click on Save and send your picture in.

Hi Scotsgran..
On Microsoft picture manager, do you go to edit pics, and then change picture size, and then resize ?
21 Mar, 2010
can you change the setting on your camera so you take 'smaller ' pictures?
I did this on my camera and solved all the probems.
21 Mar, 2010
Changing the size of the pictures does not always reduce the File size sufficiently to post easily on the Web.
21 Mar, 2010
oh I just assumed that was why it worked so well.

Wait for it, thanks to all the hard work you have had me do, the brain cells are buzzing, I can compress my file from 6.2Mb to 57kb to speed up downloading. Thank you all. I'm still learning so I know I'm not dead yet. I feel such a sense of achievement and I understand what to do. I forgot to edit the photograph before I compressed it. I was so excited at being able to compress it. I have removed it and posted the new photograph.

Congratulations. Lovely when you feel a sense of achievement, is it not?

Definitely. I am still learning computer speak in spite of having successfully completed my European Computer Driving Licence. Crop, Resize and Compress have new meanings for me now.

Now the next thing to learn how to do is to 'Sharpen' a slightly out of focus picture. After that you can learn how to take one flower and make it into a clump! Eventually you may want to learn how to embed an invisible copyright watermark into your pictures.
Enjoy learning!

My daughter says I get everything a bit out of focus and shake when taking photos, but the tripod she gave me has not been used yet. I am all for learning if you want to tell me how to "sharpen" that would be good. I know how to make clumps from one flower. I did a website for our flower show and needed to do it to decorate the pages. Embedding invisible watermarks sounds intriguing. Why is that done. Dare I ask how to do that too.
22 Mar, 2010
Believe me, if I knew I would tell you!
22 Mar, 2010
Unless you are a professional photographer I wouldn't bother with embedding a signature
22 Mar, 2010
It is done because some photographers are very precious about their pictures and don't want other people to download them from the web and use them. I don't know how to do it and wouldn't bother if I did.

Well said. Photographs of plants can mean so much to so many it is a shame that they cannot down load them but I suppose the professionals are in a catch 22 situation. We would not see the plant without them and they too have to eat. Thank you for clearing that up.

This is the reason why you may want to put a copyeight claim on your pictures. Sorry it has taken me so long to find the reference.

The standard maximum viewing display size on this site appears to be 440 x 330 (landscape) or 330 x 440 (portrait). It automatically resizes to this from my photos so I don't normally bother to resize mine.
What format image are you using Scots Gran, jpg, bmp, gif or tif?
Do you have photoshop or anything like that on your computer to resize them?
