I have struggled with this even on an average soil. It is not very hardy, is very late into growth (often not appearing until mid May); a heavy soil will not help it at all

I garden in clay soil. I've never had success with A. tuberosa, But my A. curassavica has always done fine. Sorry to say, but the latter species would probably be an annual in the UK.

from what i have read it appears to prefer a sand well drained soil. though it has been found growing in water margins in north america. So dig in lots of grit with it, if and when you plant it.
