I am going to sort out last yrs brassica bed, can I put the old stems on the compost heap or shall I discard them. Can't see any signs of disease. Do you think there safe to compost? this bed will be used for salad crops this

I would. The heat of the heap should get rid of most things. You may want to chop them up a bit. If you have had a disease in a crop like clubroot etc then just burn the lot!

I lay brassica stems on a block of wood and then lay into them with a hammer, or similar, to crush them.

Morning Bulbaholic I think that's a great idea!!!!!! An excellent way to get rid of stress and I guess they will rot down a lot faster always a good thing.
