Clematis montana with Austin climbing rose
Northants, United Kingdom
Hi all,I wondered if I could get away with planting a Montana Clem with my new climber Mortimer Sackler Rose.Just starting my new garden and as usual have bought way too many Clematis.I know the Montana's are hugely vigorous so thought I'd better ask. Many Thanks.

Thanks Bonkers,I was hoping to use one of the Four ! Montanas I grabbed at a recent market on one side of a trellis with my climber on the other side but I thought it might be risky. Why on earth I bought four rampant type ones I'm not sure .....oh yes ...they were cheap.Buy in haste ,repent at leisure as they say.

Thanks BB for your SWEET advert. of my Clematis. On the front of the house we have C.montana (3 sorts!!!) growing happily with 2 different climbing roses. The montanas flowers in April - May then the roses take over. SO I am going to have a punch-up with BB's answer over this - I say give it a whirl - could turn out a lovely sight! They must have space, our roses are planted away from where the montanas are - about 6' or so. They have intertwined and look all the better for it. Hope Mortimer is able to cope.

Sorry hadn t realised youd already bought 4 and given Spritz advice and the fact that she agreed re Sambucus - then happy to concede to the Queen of Clematis.

No problem Bonkers,I did what any self respecting gardener would do and talked my other half into putting up another trellis.Dohh, not quite as much a "bargain" as I'd planned.I also gave one to a neighbour *polishes halo* but kept the yummy Broughton star and Pink perfection and will plant "Freckles " with my roses.

'Broughton Star' is a much more well-behaved montana, Susie. When one of my montanas died suddenly I replaced it with Broughton Star and love it! 'Freckles' won't cause you any problems - it's a C.cirrhosa and not very vigorous.

Think you almost answered your own question there. With such a wide range to choose from Montana not the best to combine with any rose.Suggest you see Spritzhenrys page as much as I loathe to give her any credit [ ongoing joke between us ] - she does have some lovely varieties .
