Does anyone know roughly how long sweet pepper seeds take to germinate? I've got 2 lots in a heated propagator and they've been in there a few weeks now. The one lot was old seed, but the other lot was new seed. I've grown them from seed before, but I can't remember how long they take.....?

IME, about 10-14 days, maybe less in a propagator. The temps aren't above 35 deg. C, are they?

No, it's meant to maintain a temp of 18 - 20 degrees C. I think I sowed them beginning of March, so that's 4 weeks now.....would have expected something to happen by now.....

20 deg. C is much too cool. Better to keep it 24-30 deg. C. Peppers are tropical plants, and need extra heat to germinate--though not too much! Keeping them at 18 deg. could prevent germination. 20 deg. might allow germination, but would delay it up to 6 weeks.

I sowed mine this week, I find that earlier doesn't work for me the toms and peppers are in a propagator but the toms usually come through first and grow quicker but as the prop is in a cold greenhouse I have to be very careful when the plants come out as it may be too cold for them, i'll keep a check this year exactly how long they take

Thanks for the info - I don't think I can keep them any warmer than that, but hopefully they'll germinate in a while then.

i think that they should Sid, mine is an automatic prop so i don't know the temp, when i feel the compost it isn't hot jusr slightly warm and other years have had seed germinate without problems, i'll let you know how long they take but it will be a few weeks yet I would be interested to know when yours appear

Thanks Pam - I will let you know when mine appear. I didn't have any probs last year and I didn't have a heated prop then - so I thought they'd shoot up this year!

Think it must have been the seed, as they were in the heated propagator so both lots were at the same temp. Hmmmm - the rest of that packet has gone in the bin!!
