A lady friend of mine was given a bouquet of carnations as a present...There was a lot of little non-flowering shoots on the stems and she slipped them off and they rooted in water....Do you think these will grow and flower for her please??..

Oh yes, I've done that before now! They are probably 'greenhouse' carnations, that require a stick for support as Fractal says they have a long stem and heavy bloom, so they will flop over. .

I have done this too. they often come as small spray ones. They disbud them to get bigger blooms comercially.

yes, yes, yes!!! I do it all the time!!! I sometimes take great care and put them into potting compost; at other times when time is short, I just push them into my window box and hey presto beautiful flowers for free. I have planted some of these freebies in the back of my garden and given some away.Happy planting when the time comes

If they have roots, that is a long way towards success!
They may well be long stemmed forms selected for the cut flower trade so probably not suitable for normal garden use as they flop all over the place but I would still give them a go. Nothing to lose though maybe tie them up as they grow their flower stems.
