you could put a grow bag in and some sand in wear your putting it and mix it in to give it an easier start but fractal is right.

Then you have the right soil for roses. Do you mean a standard rose with a stem about four feet in length or a bush rose that branches from the ground? Either way, clay soil, as long as it is well drained is generally ideal for roses.
