What can I do on a dreary old day like today? Can I sow my parsnips in pots? Is it too early to sow cabbage?. I never seem to get my timings right. Gardening on my own, well mostly on my own is a bit hard. I am so glad I found you all!!

I hope they are deep pots if you are sowing parsnips in them...

Yes I was thinking that myself, sow parsnips straight into the ground.

Most seeds you can plant from now indoors and there are still flowering bulbs that you can plant out into the ground as well .
Have you a greenhouse ? If so most things will be ok in there at the moment if there are no more frosts , if not try and keep the greenhouse warm

Hi moon grower. I was only going to sow my parsnips into pots to start them off if I couldn't get into the garden today because of the rain. Im a bit worried about leaving it too late. (I think I worry too much!) But thankfully its stopped raining for a bit, so on go my wellies and out I go!!

Hi Hijuju, no my friend no greenhouse. Got told off yesterday for sowing seeds in the kitchen and putting them on the cubboard top11. Grown up kids can be so moany sometimes I think there trying to get their own back, i.e. me moaning at them when they were younger lol. I can't wait for easter so we can all really get going. Happy gardening.

Great parsnips, and carrots, need to be sown where they will grow. They are tap rooted and do not take kindly to being transplanted, we sowed ours in the control bed last Wednesday - extremely easy as seed is large enough to space out well.

If you take out a drill not too deep, remember you only need to sow seeds 4 times their size deep. Pour boiling water from the kettle along the drill, this will partially sterilize the soil and warm the ground. Sow the seeds, cover with soil then cover with fleece as a cloche, this should give you at least a weeks start and also keep off parsnip fly, do the same with carrots.

Well Doctorbob1 you've told me something I didn't know. I didn't know there were parsnip flies!!!! I knew about carrot fly. Its good to talk cheers!

Doctorbob 1 you will be proud of me; though it looked like it would rain at any minute it didn't. On went my wellies and with kettle in one hand and seeds in the other out I went. Got some strange looks from the neighbours but what's new!! There garden is a total mess!! They never use it what a waste. I sowed the whole of my roots bed with carrots, parsnips, beetroot, radishes and some more onion sets and a few cloves of garlic. Covered it with plastic and wished my seeds well. Job done.

Congratulations Pauline, sounds like a very successful day. I am sure you will have good results, remove the plastic as soon as you see any growth.

I will, I can't wait!!

No, it's not too early if you warm your ground outside with a piece of fleece, then go out and do it. If you want to do it today plant straight into the ground and take a chance.
