I have been given as a present a valley valentine, what type of soil does this plant need to be planted in

On plant Pieris japonica

If you're keeping it in a pot, use ericaceous compost - if in the garden, as long as your soil is on the acid side of neutral (i.e, not chalky alkaline) it'll be fine.
