how can I get rid of wild celendines which cover my border- I've tried for 4 years but they come back every year.

Glyphosate is the only sure way. If applied just before the plants die back in mid-late June, this will maximise the uptake of the glayphosate sugar into the leaf and down to the roots.
Cover any greenery that you need to keep, woody stems with no greenery need not be protected and can be sprayed right up to their base.
