is one spades depth of soil before getting to rubble ok to put plants in?

Probably does depend a little on the sort of plants you are intending on putting in of course.....

And what the rubble is... if this is builders rubble from a new build then you have not got a lot of good top soil and the rubble is likely to be compacted and not drain well. If you are planting herbacious plants you may get away with it, shrubs and trees will have a problem.

Personally I would like more soil Viv1, I think you may be in for trouble. Is this for your veg patch?

thanks for replys ,this i for my front garden pauline - ( not veg ) decided at last what to do with it started taking of the grass and found what looks like road stone underneath.. the grass never seems to be soggy and seems to drain ok, might have to re think my planting plans tho.will blog sometime soon

I would add plenty of well rotted compost and plant into that!
