what plants would you suggest planting under a tree as the roots are so big a cannot dig around it

Try hardy geraniums. You would need to water them until really established as it wuld be dry under a tree. Go for strong prolific ones. Ask at the garden centre.

there are all sorts. ajuga, hardy geraniums as suggested, liriope, saxifrages .
