My Acer has only produced leaves on a couple of the branches this year ?? I kept it in shelter through the winter but it appears to have produced small buds which have never bloomed . Does any one have any suggestions ?

As far as I know most Acers are winter hardy, unless you have a very delicate one. I live in Hungary with much colder winters than UK and my Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) do very well here with no extra protection other than that they are planted in a sheltered part of the garden and in shade for most of the day. I have 2 other bigger Acers (variagated leaves etc} and these are in a more exposed spot where they survive some very cold temps. When you say shelter do you mean you put it in a greenhouse or somewhere? Maybe it would prefer to be out. I have found that heat and sun do more damage, and I know that wind burn can cause problems. I lost half of one of my trees due to hot conditions so I moved it to shade and cut out the dead wood. It made an excellent recovery. So I think there is hope for yours. Maybe you need to find the best spot for it.
