Yes, some plants need to be indoors as they only survive at room temperature. If they were put outdoors in the UK, they'd die when the weather got even a little cooler, let alone frosty!
You'd have to read the label on a plant to find out how hardy it is - how much cold it will take.
There are normally separate sections in a Garden Centre for indoor and outdoor plants.
The Royal Horticultural Society gives plants a rating for hardiness, and uses 3 stars for the hardiest, then 2, 1, and then gives the temperature that a tender plant needs to survive.
