Out of interest, can you plant a new ceanothus where one has died?

if it died just coz of the cold then it might be ok. if it died of diease then no, as the disease will be in the soil.
if you do replant then make sue you add condition the soil with a good compost mix and something like fish blood and bone.

Ceonanthus are fairly short lived shrubs and as seaburn said not particularly hardy, Skylark is probably one of the hardiest. They should be planted in the warmest spot you have and they hate being waterlogged

don`t see why not as long as it didn`t die due to soil condition but add plenty of organic matter to imrove the soil anyway
