i have a rhodedendron hedge that is too high and needs trimming off its face too. When is the correct time to do this and should be done with loppers and secateurs or can a hedge trimmer be used?

This can be cut back as hard as you like, even to a foot of the ground. But wait until it has finished flowering and do th ejob in June. It will regrow well but you may lose the flowers for a year. Do one side at a time if possible and use a saw.Don't use hedge trimmers as this leaves cut leaf edges that then go brown and look awful.
