Mine is in a large pot and has been for a few years.You can trim it to a size you like.I feed it through the spring/summer with a liquid seaweed feed.
It does get the black spots that this shrub is known for but usually over winter.I have tried cutting off affected leaves and leaving them on.The plant still recovers.
As with any pot grown shrub you should look out for vine weevils.
