I want to create a bushy border against my fence. It needs to visually provide some privacy (between 5 and 6 feet high when grown) and also be good for bird hiding and nesting. I'd like to use a variety of plants for year-round greenery and possibly flowers. I'd love some suggestions please!

I agree with Louise, plant a Viburnum. I have one and it always hase some nest or another. Next to it I have a Pittosporum which gives a lovely contrast in foliage colour and shape. Another tree that is good and you can trim to shape is Bay, again loved by birds.

A brilliant shrub for ease, bushiness and bird sheltering is a Viburnum, specifically, V. tinus.
I have these and they are 'all' used, very successfully, for these very purposes !
It's an evergreen shrub that will grow to about 15' (at least mine do!!!), it has white flowers in winter and spring, and will be a good bushy shape for privacy.
