best ways to break heavy clay down in garden

Answers

just loads of compost and manure, it would have been a good idea to have turned it over and let the frost break it up, it takes time, I also empty my old compost out of the pots and work it in.

Still time to dig it roughly and let the frost break it up. Over the years I have added grit, used compost and home made compost. soil conditioner. Too much manure may burn some plants unless you wait before planting. Try not to walk on it too much as well.

Drc hit the nail on the head! Give it everything you can to break it up. The first thing I would do now is add loads of grit!
