We have a eucalyptus tree, approx 30ft, which we are having to fell, it has started to split in several places. I want to replace it with something ornamental which is evergreen, nothing as tall as the eycalyptus, but something that is fairy fast growing. We live in Cumbria. Can you help please

I'm a big fan of holly. There are some really beautiful varieties available. For choice, I'd go for a variegated one which produces red berries - you get year round interest! There are some varieties that have virtually spineless leaves, in case that's an issue with you. They also respond well to being pruned.

Only one I can think of, apart from conifers, is Arbutus, preferably A. andrachnoides, as this is the hardiest one, though still is a little susceptible when young to particularly cold winters.
