i would like to plant some plants to attract bees but only have a small boarder and have heavy soil.

More importantly, is it sunny there? If so, lavender is full of bees when in flower, but it does need a decent amount of sunshine

Last year, well every year really the lavender was covered in bees

aubretia, borage,campanula, centarea, wallflowers, cotoneaster, leopards bane, heathers, cranes bill .ivy, st jons wort,deadnettles. lavatera,poached egg plant, mahonia , nepeta.origanum, opium poppy,, mock orange,rosemary,thyme, viburnum. Reference: the Bee friendly garden by Ted Hooper and Mike Taylor. avoid ornamentals with double flowers as they make it difficultforthe bees toreach the nectar.

I had a wee section left last year and I added a box of wildflower mix, bees were all over it. kept the seeds of the nicer ones and planted them this year.
