They like sun or part shade, well-drained soil, and just plant them to the same depth as they come - i.e. to the base of the stems. I planted three last year, about 2'6" apart. which worked well. If you get them potted, you can plant them at any time, from early spring to late autumn, or even into winter if the ground isn't frozen! Either spring or autumn is best, though.
