I need to top dress my lawn, have never done it before and think it may be expensive. dont have an special tools. What is the best way to do it. Lots of hollows and ruts in the lawn

Top dressing is usually done in the autumn, not this time of year. However, if you want to level out the lawn, you can either cut (with a half moon edger) and peel back the turf, add topsoil or loam, replace the turf, or fill in the ridges and holes with topsoil or loam and add seed on top. Grass grown from seed must not be cut with a mower the first couple of times, use shears, and it needs 3 months before normal foot usage.
