The trunk of my old apple trees has turned bright orange and the bark is coming off. There are some very tiny black insects on the trunk which appear to be dead. What is it and what do I do?

What is the condition of the rest of the tree? Is it carrying leaves and continuing to grow, and blossoming? And a photograph would be helpful

The tree fruited OK last year and the leaves seemed uneffected, but the orange colour is creeping up the trunk.
The actual colour is deeper than the photograph and you can see what seems to be small dead insects on the detail picture.

Sorry Rosie, where are the pictures? they're not with this question, and they're not in your photos in your profile page. Plus, what is the tree doing now, does it have leaves that look healthy, normal? And is there any oozing from the trunk?

You can put them in your photos by going to yoiur profile page and selecting photos and uploading to there.
