I saw this on holiday as well, the stem looks abit like a piece of bamboo, what is it?

OMG looks like a large specimen of Mares tail - if it is then Popeymike right you should see a doctor , preferably a psychiatrist if you plant this gonna need your head examined!
This the worst of all regular weeds almost impervious to weedkiller a real nightmare.
