Due to the severe winter we lost two conifers at the front of the house that were in large pots. Does anyone know of shrubs that can be put in pots, can withstand a windy aspect and that are fully hardy.

I'd be inclined to replace the conifers you had - the only reason they died this last winter was because we had an exceptionally cold one. Any shrub or plant in a pot in freezing temperatures is at risk, because the likelihood is the compost in the pot froze for an extended period of time, so choosing something else hoping it'll survive better in such a winter is pointless. Unless you want something different for a change, that is.
