what's this bird?

you guys are always full of knowledge and wisdom and this is an easy one which i just know loads of you will be able to answer.
can anybody identify this bird for me? i'm sure it's probably really common but i don't think i've ever seen one before. at least if i have, i've never really paid any attention.

i'm quite excited to have anything other than starlings in the garden, which is all we seemed to get the last 3 years, but this year we've had a selection of visiting birds, this being the most recent!

they are usually in small family groups 6+ at a time. Lovely to see at any time.

In comparison to starlings gold finches are quite small Great. A little larger than a siskin.

we've had them for a few years-- they love teasel seeds-- such cheerful birds and cute babies :o)

They come every day to my sunflower hearts feeder. They also like 'niger 'seed.

We started out seeing just one,then we got some niger seeds in a feeder and all the relatives joined him :) I think they must send a look out to see what food is available lol.

We have them regularly visit our feeders along with the siskins and green finches. We used to have a lot of tits but the weather seems to have done or them. Had to rescue a swallow that had accidentally flown into the kitchen this morning.

just been to the pet shop and bought niger seed and a feeder to try and encourage them to mr goldfinch to come back. there were two just before i took the photo- hoping that they might start visiting more often!
