please can someone identify this plant for me. It does seem to be happy in heavy clay under a hawthorne tree.

I'm a complete beginner sorry.
but I do remember planting a celosia in the same spot last year. They did have purple spikes of flowers which lasted all summer (a miracle in my garden!)

i think it lookes like Centaurea too.

I'm gonna wait till it flowers take a photo, post it online and hopefully the mystery will be solved. Thank you for your suggestions I will be researching them.

looks like centaurea montana (knapweed) but i could be way of the mark.
does it have purple flowers.
