We bought a small lemon plant for our conservatory which had a fruit on it. We were delighted with it until we got home and read the label on it which says the fruit are not for human consumption! Anybody know why this would be
as we would dearly love to eat the fruit!

It wasnt Aldi it was Trago Mills in Devon, the tree itself was imported from Holland I think. That makes sense thank you I will discard the original fruit and eat the new ones. It flowered shortly after we bought it and now has another four baby lemons growing.
Many thanks for your response!

Probably a Meyer Lemon. They flower 4 times a year, so you will end up with lovely scented blossoms, small pea-sized immature fruits all the way up to mature lemons on the tree at the same time.
I have a lemon tree in my conservatory and it's a bit of a novelty to be able to pick a lemon off the tree at Christmas time for a gin & tonic for guests.
A word of warning... Depending on conditions, they can take from 4 - 6 months to fully mature from bud.

Selling it as an ornamental plant means it isn't covered by food sales legislation and it isn't necessary to display a use by/best before date. And it could have been sprayed with all sorts of pesticide.

I wonder if you can use the juice? I assume the spray is on the skin and zest only. What do people think?

Did you get it from Aldi? I know Aldi say this and it's to do with food legislation. They are covering themselves because the lemons on the tree have been sprayed to keep there looks instore with chemicals. However, I really don't know why they just don't explain this.
It's probably best not to eat the fruits that were on when you bought it, but any fruit that come later will be OK.
