No one is going to walk through these:
Rosa rugosa
Mahonia charity
Hawthorn
Blackthorn
My Spanish dagger plants slash my legs every year but not one for a fence/hedge.

dont know if it's a fast growing but Pyracantha is often used to create an impenetrable barrier.

growth rate of Pyracantha isn't fast, but it's not slow either, has wicked thorns and can usually be bought at a good size for a reasonable price.

Berberis is wicked and looks so innocent, hawthorn keeps sheep and cows in so hopefully burglars out, remember gates though.....

just seen your other question, you could choose one of these as a back against the fence type and an edible one in front so then you will have the benefits of fruit and two layers of thorny plants or choose them all!

I would just like to thank everybody for all their suggestions, I am thinking Pyracantha under the windows. And a mixed perimeter hedge of various prickly thorny shrubs, some of which will bear fruit & berries to eat through the year. But somehow sadly I don't think they will grow very fast.
Once again thank you, I'm delighted with the response.
