have a slightly sloping lawn whih i would like toake flatter any advice

It's usually easier to build a retaining wall at the lower end, and fill in with topsoil, than to level the other way. Be sure to remove the turf wherever it would be buried--the turves can be saved and replanted at the new level. Be careful not to change the grade within the dripline (under the branches) of any nearby trees or bushes, since that can damage or kill them.
